Control Magazine cover
I was asked to do a cover illustration for Control Magazine, a dutch mag about game development in the Netherlands.
In the current issue there’s a feature about the recent Game Developer Conference, held in San Francisco. The cover was supposed to refer to the GDC and the Netherlands, so it was my boss who came up with the idea of a 17th century dutch ship entering the San Francisco bay.
The ship is based on the Batavia, a Dutch East India Company ship that shipwrecked on her maiden voyage and is famous for the mutiny and masacre that took place between the survivors. Pictures from a replica of the ship (which can be visited in Lelystad, the Netherlands) provided me with some excellent reference.
The overall style of the illustration was very much inspired by the japanese anime film Tekkon Kinkreet. If you’ve never heard of that flick, go look for it now! It features tons of the most gorgous hand drawn backgrounds I’ve ever seen, mostly of this gigantic metropolis in which it takes place…the story is pretty cool too by the way.

hmmm…what?
I did some more work on this one. Not that much though. Did a bit of colour tweaking and some touch-ups on her japanese sleeves. Just felt like making a post…
